Stone Carving

Stone Carving

Thanks to Josephine Crossland and Jack Handscombe, I’ve been afforded an informal apprenticeship in letter-cutting; transferring my skills in the lettering arts onto stone. It’s been incredibly enriching seeing firsthand a memorial mason’s pragmatic and physical approach to letter design; the antithesis of the training I’ve received in type design. The v-cut and the material itself nudges and necessitates specific treatments of serifs and stem connections. I can’t imagine a better way to while away ones hours, than to the rhythm of the chisel clinking against stone.

Intuit is carved into Portland Limestone, Taushed in red, Locharbriggs Sandstone. The latter contains a typo, but it’s not like it’s carved in stone…
